PROGRAM NOTES:

This version of the Radio Sonata is an excerpt from the complete Radio Sonata, which is itself an excerpt from the 1982 theater piece For Love of the Double Bass.  At this point in the theater piece the bassists has turned on the radio and decided to play along.  The music is an example of ‘optimistic media style,’ quite continuous and unimpeded by elevated compositional discourse, the point being that the bassist likes to play along with the radio, as the radio likes to play along with the bassist:  Happy Media.                                                                                                                                                                                            -James Sellars
