PROGRAM NOTES:
Stay With Me is a four-movement work in a fast-slow-fast-slow format written for the unusual combination of 6 double basses. The work is symphonic in nature and highlights the unique timbre and remarkably wide tessitura of the double bass. Stay With Me was used as the basis for Yoshiko Chuma’s imaginatively staged work, May I Have This Dance, for 6 choreographed double bassists which had a week-long run of performances in New York’s off-Broadway, Duke Theater, in 2001. It was performed by the Hartt Bass Band. –Robert Black
