TANGO FOR TWO (CELLOS)

2 vc
Duration: 4:00
Date of Composition: 1980

PROGRAM NOTES:

This Tango for Two (Cellos) should not be played too fast, so that the full string sonorities can develop; yet rhythmically it should mostly remain exact, as in any dance music.  It belongs to a long line of tangos written in the twentieth century, which are perhaps in some ways analogous to the Minuet of eighteenth-century music.  The tango began as a risqué dance, banned by the genteel before gaining legitimacy as a ballroom classic.
